EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
