From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release

But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.

Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.

“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Response

Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.

The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
