Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
